AMERICANS are going to the polls on November 6th, in mid-term elections that will determine control of both houses of Congress. Although Donald Trump will not be up for re-election for another two years, this year’s contests are widely seen as a referendum on the president. Since Mr Trump was sworn into office 656 days ago, America’s economy has maintained a healthy pace of growth, and unemployment has continued to fall. Nonetheless, the president is consistently unpopular: around 40% of Americans approve of his job performance, whereas roughly 50% disapprove. As soon as the election results are in, presidential contenders will begin jockeying to run against him in 2020. Mr Trump has just 730 days to convince Americans that he is indeed making America “great again”.
